Sex Therapy and Sexual Problems |
Sex Therapy refers to the therapy process to help people understand and overcome their sexual difficulties and improve their sexual health. Sex Therapy consists of a thorough verbal assessment of the sexual problems, the possible causes and the implications or consequences of the problems and related issues, and the development of a treatment plan which includes goals, treatment options, desired outcomes and relapse prevention (if needed). The treatment options will be tailored to the desired outcomes and can entail education, exercises, and/or referral/cooperation with a medical physician. Sex Therapy aims to be a multidisciplinary approach if necessary, to ensure all aspects of human sexuality are covered and included.
People can consult our psychology practice for different reasons: sex problems are causing problems in your relationship or marriage, you would like to overcome your sexual dysfunction to build your sexual self-esteem and feel confident about your sexual performance, you are experiencing difficulties in regards to your gender (genderdysphoria) or sexual identity (gay/lesbian feelings) or you'd like to discuss questions about your sexual health or intimate relationship. We also provide therapy services for general psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, weight issues or trauma, without any focus on sexuality. See our Psychology pages for more information on these topics. Sex Therapy can be provided by professionals with various backgrounds. Selma van Diest is a Clinical Psychologist and will provide therapy following the Code of Ethics of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) that describes guidelines on responsibility, confidentiality and professional conduct. Sex Therapy can be provided to individuals as well as to couples (marriage counselling), based on the professional opinion of the sex therapist or the preferences of the client.
